Operations > Deer
Landcorp Farming is New Zealand's largest venison producer, accounting for more than 9% of national production. This country pioneered pastoral farming of deer during the 1970s, with the first herds established from feral animals captured in forest areas of the South Island. Landcorp has been among New Zealand farmers who have led the way in developing better methods of farming deer on pasture.
Twenty six Landcorp farms carry deer, mostly in parallel with their sheep and beef production. These properties are in the Central North Island, Westland, Otago and Southland. Deer herds are predominantly Red Deer hinds, which are bred to either Landcorp Red or Landcorp Wapiti sires. (Red deer was a forest-grazing species introduced to the wild for sport hunting during the 19th century). Venison production is mainly to specifications originating mainly in European markets. The processing season is from September to June.
The volumes of Landcorp production enable the Company to place the bulk of its supply with large New Zealand-based processors and customers, while also being able to serve niche markets for animals and animal products.
