Landcorp operates three Angus and one Simmental bull breeding farms.
With Landcorp Angus, genetic selection is focused on maternal traits. The breeding cows are renowned for their ability to reproduce in a wide climatic and geographic range. They are early maturing and low maintenance, with dependable calving and good calving ease. The breeding objective is to increase the cow's lifetime profitability (which includes cost to feed). The programme has increased progeny finishing weights and led to higher levels of cow fertility (ie number of calves weaned per cow).
Landcorp Simmental bulls are bred as terminal sires to capitalise on the maternal ability of Landcorp Angus cows by adding carcass weight to the first cross calves. Selected for live-weight and carcass traits, Landcorp Simmental bulls are recognised through Breedplan as Australasian trait leaders contributing to stud and commercial herds.
